Literature Text

Here is a warm sea.
The skylarks that dance in the sky are tears.
You're a kind and green child.

She woke with a start, hand fluttering up automatically to grab at the locket that hung around her neck, body tensed to spring at a moment's notice. Clutching the pendant in her hand, she relaxed ever so slightly, eyes flicking to and fro as she checked her surroundings. Still there, it was still there, and that's all that mattered…

"As long as you have this, you'll always be safe. As long as you have this, I'll always come running for you." Safe. She was safe, and more importantly, alive. For now. No, she'd always be safe, as long as she had it with her. Because he'd promised. He'd find her, and they'd be together again. Forever.

The lyrics of the familiar lullaby drifted through her mind. While she could never remember the voice or even the face of the singer upon waking, she never forgot the words.

Here is a warm sea.
The great, great affection that sleeps in the depths of my chest
Quietly wakes with the warmth of held palms.

Sleep was always short, and always fitful. Yet nightmares never visited her, soothed instead by the soft crashing of waves and that melancholy voice.

Her fingers fondly traced a path along the bedspread, despite circumstances, she always felt a sense of ease within the bedroom – the only part of the house that she'd painstakingly maintained. In here, not even a day had passed since then.

But supplies were low and she could no longer put off the inevitable.

A soft sigh and she closed the door gently behind her, leaving her safe haven once again. But she would be back, and she would wait for him…

Peering around the corner of the building, body pressed to the wall, her heart hammered wildly in her chest. Just another block, just another block and she'd be home.
A trail of blood paved a path of crimson down her right arm, ruby jewels dripping off the tips of her fingers before painting the pavement with its little splatters. How could she have been so careless?

The quiet was deafening, was it safe now? How much time had passed?

One tentative step, followed by another. Nothing happened. Emboldened, her small steps became even strides, soon enough she was running. Her breath came out in shallow pants, but a glimmer was in her eyes. There, right there. Just a few more feet and she'd be safe again.

A shot rang out.

The sound startled her more than the sudden sear of heat she felt in her chest. Pitching forward with the momentum of her running, she smelled the tang of iron before she tasted it on her tongue.

But it was okay. Because he'd come for her. He'd come for her…

Here is a warm sea.
Long ago, everyone was one in the world.
Come here, it's a warm universe.

From the shadows of a nearby building, heavy footsteps approached the woman.  Squatting down next to her, he said nothing. In her hand, she held a locket. Perhaps it was out of curiosity, or perhaps it was due to respect. Untangling the pendant from stiffening fingers, he examined it for a moment. It was rather plain; there were no special marking or engravings on it. Opening it with a click, he closed it and placed it back in her hand.

There was nothing in it.
